Newborn Care is a comprehensive class that teaches couples what
to expect with their newborn. Parents-to-be will be prepared for
daily care: feeding, sleep, poops, diapering, circumcision and
umbilical cord care, bathing, and dressing. You will learn what
a healthy newborn looks like (there are lots of things that seem
like they couldn't possibly be normal, but are!). We will also
discuss temperament, crying and comforting techniques, behavior
states, and understanding how a newborn communicates. Couples
will understand when their baby needs to be seen by their health-care
provider, how to choose a health-care provider, and that each
baby and family is unique. The class is interactive and time is
allotted for all questions!
The class is taught by Chanin McClurkin, RN, MSN, CPNP, a pediatric
nurse practitioner (PNP). PNPs provide pediatric primary health
care (newborn to age 18) including well-child examinations, developmental
screening, and diagnosing and managing common and complex health/illness
conditions. PNPs are recognized for their focus on health promotion,
prevention of disease and disability and family-centered care.
Chanin earned her master's degree in pediatric primary care at
Vanderbilt University. She has over ten years experience with
families of diverse cultural backgrounds, and children of diverse
needs. Newborn care and care of the adolescent female are her
special interests. Her patients love her holistic, compassionate
approach to well-child care.
