I will bring my over three decades of delivery room nursing practice and evidence to your learning experience. I include information and data from AWHONN (Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses), ACOG (The American Congress of Obstetrics and Gynecologists), midwifery associations, and input from the Doula community.
I have designed a mixed method class tailored to help you have a better hospital birth. If you are planning a home birth I will be happy to refer you to one of our wonderful community midwives and doulas for labor support post partum support.
My belief revolves around “truth to power” in decision making so if you’ve decided to have a hospital birth there are some actualities that should be known, questions that should be asked and I will help you explore communicate your birth wishes.
I also offer a cesarean birth class. For our “high risk” community there’s a class just for you.
If you desire a private class we can do it in your home or Zoom.
I will send materials to print, video demonstrations to watch and practice and instructions for joining class. Your job is to find a nice comfy spot to participate.
All of the key players in your care should foster a sense of well being and collaboration to give you the best possible birth experience. It’s your right and responsibility to question your care if you have concerns, to ask for time to discuss anything with your labor nurse at any time and to be supported in your birth choices provided those choices are safe and within the community standards of care.
Those who choose hospital birth with an OB or hospital based midwife should understand something about “hospital policy" “standards of care" and “informed consent”. If you are not covering these topics in your birth class I urge you to explore these subjects on your own and ask your birth teachers, OB’s and midwives for information. If you are hiring a labor doula she should understand community standards of care and hospital policy and to help you become familiar with these policies.
Best,
Lizabeth (Lizzie) Baker Wade, RN
